Fat Cats And Podgy Puppies Among Pets In Weight Loss Competition

    March 14, 2012

Fat cats are known for being greedy but Fifi Bottomley takes the biscuit. The morbidly obese moggy is just one of the family pets hoping to get in shape for a national competition.

Weighing in at a hefty 9.3kg (1st 7lb), Fifi is double the size she should be.
The eight-year-old piled on the pounds after stealing food from other cats – but now she is one of the finalists in the  PDSA’s Pet Fit Club competition.

Fifi will be joining other flabby felines and portly pups to receive tailored diet advice and exercise – with the winner  receiving a year’s supply of pet food.

The animal losing the most weight over the next six months will also win their owner a pet-friendly holiday worth £500.

Fifi, from Bradford, is going up against ten other contestants including a roast dinner-loving labrador, a border collie whose excess pounds play havoc with his arthritis and a rabbit who weighs more than the average cat.

Combined, the animals are more than 152kg (24st) overweight.

The PDSA says about 2.9million dogs and 3million cats are losing the battle of the bulge in Britain after 90 per cent of owners admitted feeding them cheese, crisps and takeaways.

But the charity’s Sean Wensley said: ‘It’s never too late to make positive changes to a pet’s diet and lifestyle.’

Playful Polar Bear Family Finally Emerge After Months In Hibernation

    March 23, 2012

Two playful polar bear cubs crawl over their mother dozing in the spring sunshine – as she shows a patience only a parent could have.

The portraits were captured as the family emerged from their snow den for the first time since the cubs were born in the depths of winter.

And faced with their first sight of sunshine on the shores of Canada’s Hudson Bay, the pair wanted nothing more than to clamber all over her.

However only after she had first gingerly poked her head outside to see if it was safe for them to emerge.

Photographer Christine Haines said: ‘Only pregnant females enter maternity dens to give birth. The cubs are usually born in December and emerge in March.

'Once she has opened the den, it can take several days before she will bring them out.

'It took six days to wait for them to emerge. Our coldest day was -48C (-54F) with wind chill.’

Despite the mother’s powerful frame, she will not have eaten for months in hibernation, so as soon as the cubs are ready, the family sets off towards the edge of the sea ice where the mother will start hunting, giving her cubs their first lesson.

The snapper added: 'This was a dream come true for me to see them in their natural environment.’

    Dear Spazzzzzzzz,

The moss couldn't get a certificate of occupancy for the south side of the tree from the division of wildlife, which left only the north side to grow on.  The north side was grandfathered in by Harriet Tubmans father.  He told her that she should find the moss on the north side of trees so she could find her way to freedom.  Simply because he lived a long time ago, the moss didn't need to go through government channels.  History was in the favor of the moss.

In 1998 Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, "many others requested their own 'right handed' version."

  • Fat People?

    Tudesday2

Xanga seems to be obsessed with fat these days.

I found this image under a google image search for fat models.

I believe that 75 years ago this woman would have been considered average size.

This is an old classical nude.

At the time, that is what the ideal shape was for a woman.

In recent years, people have been photoshopping many of the old nudes to conform to more recent cultural ideas about the ideal body shape.

It is interesting how people's opinions about fat are affected by the culture they live in.

It is also interesting how people think that what they think NOW is correct, and that everything that was thought before is no longer valid.

This all seems pretty foolish to me.

Some of the MOST beautiful, loving, sexy people are not the current culturally ideal size.

Some are fatter, some skinnier, some taller, some shorter.

Thinking about all this, the word STOOPID comes to mind!

Dead Turkey Joke of the Day

Two young men were out in the woods on a camping trip, when the came upon this great trout brook. They stayed there all day, enjoying the fishing, which was super.

At the end of the day, knowing that they would be graduating from college soon, they vowed that they would meet, in twenty years, at the same place and renew the experience.

Twenty years later, they met and traveled to a spot near where they had been years before. They walked into the woods and before long came upon a brook. One of the men said to the other, "This is the place!".

The other replied, "No, it's not!".

The first man said, "Yes, I do recognize the clover growing on the bank on the other side.

To which the other man replied, "Silly, you can't tell a brook by it's clover."

Heidi the Cross-Eyed Opossum to Become a Soap Star

    March 17, 2011

Heidi the cross-eyed opossum is to become a TV soap star in a top-rated drama based on veterinarians, producers have revealed.

Heidi - whose bizarre looks have turned her into world wide star - will play herself in the hit German show Dr Mertens: Vet.

Early plot leaks from public broadcaster ARD indicated that Heidi would be involved in a plot about her undergoing radical pioneering surgery to correct her sight.

But programme-makers have assured fans that Heidi will film all her scenes in her enclosure at Leipzig Zoo, Germany.

One source on the show said: 'She is playing herself and all her scenes will be filmed at her zoo so she isn't disturbed too much by the process. But if it goes well, she could join the cast for a much longer run.'

Heidi became a massive star when pictures of her oddball looks began to appear around the world and now has a Facebook page with hundreds of thousands of friends.

Earlier this year she helped host an Oscars show on a live TV link to the USA and successfully tipped three out of four Academy Awards.

One keeper said: 'She is a natural performer but she never leaves her enclosure so she'll always keep her feet on the ground.'

Bird Befriends Schoolboy – And Keeps Landing on His Head

    March 16, 2011

A jackdaw bird has become a real-life Kes after befriending schoolboy Emmanuel Adams while he walked to school - and has now moved into the boy's home.

The jackdaw began landing on the head of Emmanuel Adams as he walked to school, and now comes with him into his home, perching on the ten-year-old’s shoulder while he watches television.

It resembles the plot of the 1969 film Kes, in which a disillusioned schoolboy develops a relationship with a kestrel that he took from a nest.

The curious crow has been living with the Adams family for the past few days.

‘Any time I walk to school or come back, it goes on my arm,’ said Emmanuel, from Sunderland.

Since January, the bird pestered other pupils at St Mary's RC Primary School, dive-bombing them at breaks.

But the jackdaw has taken a particular shine to Emmanuel who insists that the bird is 'not a bully'.

His mother, Carolyn, 46, says: 'The bird took an instant liking to Emmanuel; he would approach him as he walked to school. He picked him out from the other school kids.

'One day he just sat on Emmanuel's arm and from then on he would go to school with the bird perched on his arm or shoulder.

'A lorry driver nearly crashed watching him; he was so amazed by it.'

He has named the crow Jack and Carolyn says she has been asking experts for advice about what to do.

Could This Be The Most Relaxed Polar Bear Ever?

    March 14, 2012

After a hard day of work there is nothing better than sitting back, putting your feet up and relaxing - even if you're a polar bear.

Professional wildlife photographer Don Johnston has caught one polar bear doing just that, watching the world go by from the ice at Seal River Heritage Lodge, in Manitoba, Canada.

This area, on the shores of Hudson Bay, is known as the polar bear capital of the world, as the sea ice and its significant seal population attract the giant predators in great numbers.

After firing off a number of shots, Mr Johnston picked out this particular snap as his favourite as the bear looks 'so relaxed and comfortable'.

'I'd say the bear is just killing time. They wait for the ice to form on Hudson Bay, and then head out to feed on seals,' explained Mr Johnston, who had been watching the animals for some time.

'My guess is that the bear is conserving energy. At this time in the season they are hungry and they are waiting for the feeding conditions to improve.'

The polar bear's natural habitat, the sea ice of the Arctic Circle, is slowly receding due to climate change. It is thought that there are now only around 25,000 of these creatures left in the wild.

Tom And Jerry Comes To Life As Surrey Cat Has Stand-Off With Fearless Mouse

    March 14, 2012

A cat-owner in Reigate, Surrey, was shocked to discover her pet being confronted by a gutsy little mouse in her back garden.

Who's afraid of Tom, the tabby cat? Well, certainly not his traditional nemesis, ‘Jerry’ the mouse.

In a real-life echo of the cartoons, the 18-month-old cat was left miffed after the wood mouse more than stood his ground during their battle of the species.

Tom had sauntered into the garden with the rodent clamped in his mouth to indulge in the feline pastime of casual cruelty followed by a tasty snack.

But Jerry refused to play the victim and during a ten-minute face-off, even managed to scratch Tom on the nose.

Owner Stephanie Evans, 41, looked out of her window shocked to see the  mismatched pair seemingly playfighting.

‘He put the mouse down and instead of running away the mouse just confronted him. Tom was so shocked he just stood there,’ she said.

'In the end they ended up playing in the garden together for ages,' Stephanie told Surrey Today. 'That's why I was able to get such a good shot.

'I honestly have never seen anything like it. It was very comical but definitely not normal.'

Stephanie described her pet as, 'incredibly submissive and gentle and eventually the little mouse just went under the shed.'

Jerry eventually scurried under a fence but was found in a neighbouring greenhouse in Reigate, Surrey. Perhaps in wait to smash a flower pot over Tom’s head?

Dead Turkey Joke of the Day

One day an out of work mime is visiting the zoo and attempts to earn some money as a street performer. Unfortunately, as soon as he starts to draw a crowd, a zookeeper grabs him and drags him into his office.

The zookeeper explains to the mime that the zoo's most popular attraction, a gorilla, has died suddenly and the keeper fears that attendance at the zoo will fall off. He offers the mime a job to dress up as the gorilla until they can get another one. The mime accepts.

So the next morning the mime puts on the gorilla suit and enters the cage before crowd comes. He discovers that it's a great job. He can sleep all he wants, play and make fun of people and he draws bigger crowds than he ever did as a mime. However, eventually the crowds tire of him and he tires of just swinging on tires.

He begins to notice that the people are paying more attention to the lion in the cage next to his. Not wanting to lose the attention of his audience, he climbs to the top of his cage, crawls across a partition, and dangles from the top to the lion's cage. Of course, this makes the lion furious, but the crowd loves it. At the end of the day the zoo-keeper comes and gives the mime a raise for being such a good attraction.

Well, this goes on for some time, the mime keeps taunting the lion, the crowds grow larger, and his salary keeps going up. Then one terrible day when he is dangling over the furious lion, he slips and falls. The mime is terrified. The lion gathers itself and prepares to pounce.

The mime is so scared that he begins to run round and round the cage with the lion close behind. Finally, the mime starts screaming and yelling, "Help, Help me!" but the lion is quick and pounces.

The mime soon finds himself flat on his back looking up at the angry lion and the lion says, "Shut up you idiot! Do you want to get us both fired?"

Thrill-Seeking German Bears Snapped Hurtling Down Snowy Slopes

    March 6, 2012

These two European brown bears seemed to be having the time of their lives sliding on their backsides in the snow in front of stunned onlookers.

It seems even bears enjoy a snow day, as the pair of bears frolicked in the snow acting like excitable children, taking turns to slide to the bottom of the frozen slope.

Their incredible 20-minute display was captured by British photographer Duncan Usher who travelled to a German wildlife park to capture some action shots, but ended up with a little more than he bargained for.

He said: 'I decided to travel to the park in the hope of getting some action shots of animals in a snowy environment.

'The two bears were frolicking in the fresh snow, just like children, and they repeatedly slid down a short slope, grunting and puffing with delight and obviously enjoying the early spring sunshine.

'They attracted a very large crowd of park visitors, who were exclaiming and crying with laughter at the bears' antics.'

The five-year-old animals even lifted up their back paws to make themselves go faster before ending their run in somersaults at the wildlife park in Bavaria, Germany.

Mr Usher from Allendale, Northumberland said he has never experienced anything like it in 25 years of animal photography.

'The bears kept up the entertainment for about 20 minutes and ended up play-fighting and rolling around in the snow together,' he continued.

'They were very entertaining and in 25 years of animal photography I have never experienced brown bears playing so enthusiastically, or so intensively.'

The 57-year-old, currently living in Lower Saxony, Germany, added: 'I'm glad that I made the effort to drive down to the park that day, seeing as I obtained some very exciting and unusual imagery and the experience itself was unforgettable.'

After a lot of fun and a short play fight the two bears eventually headed their separate ways.

Terrified Pensioner Stalked By 25-Pound Turkey Called Godzilla

    March 6, 2012

An elderly American woman is too frightened to leave her home after being stalked by an angry turkey called Godzilla for over two months.

Edna Geisler now wakes up an extra hour early to avoid the wild bird on her daily trip to the post office after becoming 'afraid to go out of the house'.

Godzilla regularly attacks visitors to Ms Geisler's front yard, jumping out of bushes on unsuspecting members of the public.

The 69-year-old told the Detroit Free Pass she is now so frightened of the bird that she has become a virtual hermit.

'I'm afraid to go out of my house,' revealed Geisler. 'I have to go to the post office at 6 o'clock in the morning to avoid him.

'I had to go next door to the neighbours and have him use a push broom to keep him away while I brought the groceries in,' she added after the bird blocked the path to her door when she returned home from a shopping trip.

The aggressive turkey has been nicknamed Godzilla, a fictional monster made famous in a series of Hollywood films.

Local resident Rick Reid, a friend of the stalking victim, has also been attacked regularly on visits to the house.

'He tried to come right in the door,' Reid said. 'He bit me on the elbow. He's probably 25 to 30 pounds.'

Godzilla patrols Ms Geisler's drive everyday, launching flying attacks on anyone who approaches.

He arrives on her property from a nearby wood at 7am every morning and leaves every evening at the same time without fail.

Turkeys are known to be extremely aggressive when defending their territory, according to wildlife expert Tim Payne.

'That's an adult bird. It's trying to defend the area or the territory,' Payne told the Free Pass. 'They can be aggressive in terms of defending the territory.

'This bird has probably attacked, and the person retreats,' Payne said. 'What it tells the bird is: "What I'm doing is good". It reinforces the aggressive behaviour.'

Michigan currently has over 200,000 wild turkeys which roam the vast surrounding woodland territory of the Great Lakes.

Hank The Cat Running For US Senate Seat In Virginia

    February 28, 2012

Voters in Virginia will have the chance to elect the purr-fect candidate for their senate seat after a cat named Hank entered the race.

Hank, a nine-year-old former street cat, has a strong presence on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter while also having his own website.

With a slogan of 'milk in every bowl', Hank's run for election is based around job creation with the feline candidate described as a 'proud independent'.

Hank's promotional materials paint a picture of him having 'real world experience, a unique point of view, and limitless energy'.

On his official website Hank states: 'If I had to sum up my feelings for Virginia's future, I would have to say: Meow.'

'When I'm elected to the Senate, I'm going to work hard to make sure that there is milk in every bowl across this great nation.'

Also in the race for election are two former Virginia governors, Republican George Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine.

However, with all the buzz surrounding him, Hank will certainly be feline confident that he can compete well for the seat vacated by Democrat senator Jim Webb.

Virginia voters have even been treated to an advert as part of the 'cat-paign', in an attempt to usher Hank into power.

Laughing Owl Seems To Find Life A Hoot

    February 29, 2012

Perhaps he was just tickled by a loose feather but this owl seems to be having the time of his life.

The snowy owl appears to be throwing back his head, closing his eyes and letting out a huge belly laugh as he perches on a branch.

The image was taken by photographer Tin Man Lee, who hiked for miles to capture shots of the beautiful birds in their natural mountain habitat.

He said: ‘I think the owl was actually yawning – but it looks like its smiling. Owls usually have their eyes shut during the daytime, so it was really incredible to see this one pulling such a funny face.’

Mr Lee, from Los Angeles, timed his visit to the Olympic national park in Washington, US, so that he had the best chance of seeing the birds hunting in early February.

But his challenging 8km (five-mile) hike in strong Pacific Ocean winds to reach the spot was anything but funny. ‘I was walking on rotten tree branches when one of them broke,’ he said. ‘I was carrying my camera gear so I had to land on my knees. It was painful, but worth it to get this shot.’

The image is the latest to capture animals in apparent stages of mirth. Riley the dog won many fans when his ‘glee’ was captured at a birthday party, while other shots show a ‘smiling’ bumble bee and a ‘grinning’ Thornback ray.

    Dear Spazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz,

Those coats are custom created for each animal.  The creator is the most amazing of all.  Fur coats that exactly fit cats is only one of his cool designs.  You should check out how he makes exactly the right amount of scales for each fish no matter the size.  Pretty awesome!!!
