  • Recess

We did all sorts of stuff at recess when we were kids!

This was taken in 1964 - a campaign year!

That's a Barry Goldwater for President button the one kid is holding up!

It was also the year of Beatlemania hitting the states!

Can you tell they are trying to imitate this pose?

You could climb on the jungle gym and swings.

You could pretend to fight - they frowned on real fighting.

Yup! A fake fight was always fun!

And it was always fun when the snow came!

    Throwing a snowball!

In nicer weather we would play marbles under that tree.

    Yup! Recess was good!

You're just jealous because the voices are talking to me and not you!

You are depriving some poor village of its idiot!

Forget world peace. Visualize using your turn signal.

    So you're a feminist...Isn't that cute.

What did you do at recess?

  • We had an area full of board games for those who didn't want to play kickball... I usually played parcheesi!

  • As I recall, my youngest daughter, when asked at her Kindergarten graduation, said her favorite subject was recess!

  • I remember Barry Goldwater. Is that a sign of how old I am? I'm glad I grew up in an era where schools still had God in them and the Pledge of Allegiance. I remember praying at lunch time and saying the pledge every morning.

  • 2964 was the year I graduated from high school.  Now, THAT'S old.

  • Morning Donkey...

I don't really remember what we did at recess... I ust remember being with girlfriends having fun!

  • well,  the nuns said that we girls were loud on the recess ground cause we wanted the boys attention so after that we were quiet.lol

Goldwater turned liberal before he died-my sister lives in Az.

  • I remember a school yard that looked very similar to that!   I also like the "dress code" of the kids in those pictures.  nice shirts, belts, decent pants, dresses, socks... they look good.  :)

  • I am amazed at how many childhood photos you have, Donkey, and they are all so good! But how did you get the ones at school - who took them?

  • Wow - Awesome pics!!! - Awesome memories.  I remember jumping rope a lot - with the double ropes and playing the games as the rope got faster and faster - I was very good at it actually.  Yes the jungle jim but my fav was the old fashioned merry-go-round where people got in the middle and pushed and the ones riding had better hold on for dear life. - I got slung off once and it wasn't a pretty picture - lol.  And of course the Beatles - Guess I'll give away my age (like it wasn't obvious) but in 1964 I SAW the Beatles in person at the Houston Colisieum (sp ck) - either their first or second American Tour - I was 14.  I still have my ticket stub - Cost:  $5.00.

More recess memories - Playing chase, hide and go seek, Blind Man's Bluff, Ring around the Rosie, Farmer in the Dell, London Bridge is Falling Down, Dodge Ball, and just walking around arm in arm with (as they call it now) my BFF's.

    Hugs!!

  • we had monkey bars but the girls couldn't play on it cause we had to wear dresses, they wouldn't even let us wear pants under them at recess....so the girls mostly played hop scotch that way we didn't show off our panties!
