The Depot
It used to be, there was a train depot in almost any small town or city. Back before the development of our extensive highway system and the common use of planes, the train depot was the place that every material dream stopped along the way to its destination! Whether you were going to the person or place of your dreams, of the person or thing of your dreams was coming to you, it stopped at the train depot.
You might take a car to get to the depot, but if it was a long trip, you took the train. You slept on the train, you ate on the train, you had your honeymoon on the train - you took the train!
A few of the old depots are still in use today, but in many small towns, not only have they torn down the depot, they have ripped out the tracks!
From the wikipedia article linked above:
Early stations were usually built with both passenger and goods facilities (though there was very often a separate freight terminal nearby, even in quite small communities). This dual purpose is less common today, and in many cases goods facilities are restricted to major stations. Generally stations are sited next to a railway or railroad line, or form the terminus for a particular route.
In rural and remote communities across Canada and the United States passengers wanting to board the train had to literally flag the train down in order for it to stop. Such stations were known as "Flag stations".
Many train stations — unsurprisingly — date from the 19th century and reflect the architecture of the time, grand in scale and size, lending prestige to the city as well as to railway operations. Countries where railways arrived later may still have such architecture, as later stations often imitated 19th century styles. Various forms of architecture have been used in the construction of railway stations, from those boasting grand and intricate almost baroque-style edifices, to more stark utilitarian or modern styles. Stations built more recently often have a similar feel to airports, with a cold and plain abstract style.
This is a restored depot in Texas.
Before the telephone, frequently, the telegraph office was located at the depot! Imagine xanga posts transferred via the telegraph and morse code! With a huge fee for each comment or post!

DONKEY BUCKS!! i doubt they are any good.
can anybody make a better offer than Donkey??? That ear has alot of ideas.
I don't have a depot, per say but I used to live in Italy and took the train a lot. It is a lot more fun than riding the subway, that is for sure. Many of the photos you have look a lot like the old train stations in Italy that no one really uses but here is the one I rode most frequently to Venice or Bologna.

Ive been to a few of the old depots around this part of the country that have been restored and they are just beautiful. Its a shame lots of depots have been torn down and not preserved for their historical value. Have a good day Donkey!
I, for one like your compliments. I really don't care what Music thinks. I will take any little bit I can get.
As for the train thing. I love trains and train depots. Whenever I see or hear of an old train depot turned into a restaurant we try to go to it. My Dad worked for a time for New York Central and we got to go on a few free train trips. For years we visited and Aunt and used to walk the railroad tracks picking berries. My cousin ended up being an train engineer. We lived almost on top of the train tracks for more then 25 years and moved to a place where the train runs through the center of town. The depot not far from us is, you guessed it, a train store. One of our sons collects those teeny model trains.
We once went to Arkansas and went on a dinner train ride that was hysterical, because it went a couple of miles down the track and stopped, served dinner and went back to the depot. The was very memorable. Several years ago we took a train to NYC and saw the Rocketts Christmas show. That was a great trip. I could go on but I am taking up too much of your space.
My depot is, of course, church. I wanted to say the Lotto counter but it doesn't sound very nice does it?
So you still haven't found the ear! Poor Donkey... tsk, tsk. Hey, you think you can have your Donkey bucks in smaller denominations?
We have an old depot here that they haven't done too much with since it was closed down. It is still in very good shape so it would be nice if somebody did something with it.
When did your ear go missing? You are willing to pay that much in Donkey bucks to get it back?/ Maybe the same person that has zanyajc frogs also has your ear!!LOL
haha great update
this is definetly not the topic I suggested, lol
I don't know when if ever I've been on a train before,
I've ridden metros and subways, though,
I love the metro!!!!
have a fabulous friday,
~~~megan
Do you need to hire a detective to find your ear? Do you have a list of suspects? When was it last seen?
My grandparents live right next to the railroad tracks and my grandfather was a gang boss for L&N Railroad. A couple of times I hid behind his truck seat when he went to work...I was about 5 or 6. Once he got out of the truck and the coast was clear, I'd jump out and start running around Radnor Yard in Nashville. I'd eventually get ratted out and caught. He'd call and tell my grandmother and I'd get sent home on the next train going past the house. I got a switching both times but it was SO worth it!
What is that in your profile picture??? A cheap plastic ear???
YOU guys are too funny!
No depots but, if there was one it would be my parents house. LOL
Trains are prevalent (I spelled that wrong) in my family. Husband loves 'em ... does the whole model train thing. Son loves 'em. My dad had his retirement from the police force in an old train station!! There is one in our town (Purcellville, Virginia ... like anyone cares ... ha) that they recently restored. There's also an old mill beside it that they turned into a fancy schmancy restaurant.
I'm babbling about nothing and I haven't answered your question. See, I think I already live in my train depot ... in my home with my family. That's really all I've ever dreamed of having -- a wonderful husband, beautiful kids, friends and family who care about me. The train stopped, I got off and I'm not gettin' back on.
i was offered monopoly money and a get out of jail free card.
All the touble i seem to bounce into, that card is priceless.
We will see if anyone can top that before i find the ear!
We have a tiny little depot here, and an actual train comes through and stops.... it is only 3 cars, including the engine, lol...
My depot? HMmmm. not sure, interesting question...
Great entry!
TGIF and have a great weekend.
