And the answers are:
1. It is a picture of an oil lamp that was mounted on Model T Fords, and
2. Model T parts catalogs call this light a "Side Lamp" although a few call it a "Side Light".
However - after further research - I note that some parts catalogs also refer to this part as a cowl light - although it seems clear the light was NOT ALWAYS located on the cowl! See the third Model T picture below.
Further, one car parts catalog even offers a picture of the "cowl" light:
That being said, beadbrat not only recognized what it was but came up with ONE of the names used by at least one car parts seller! So she must be declared the winner! However, I think it is unlikely that an oil lamp was used as a turn signal. (If someone would have said "Side Lamp" this would have been hard to choose a winner!)
But also winners are Dragon2000 who recogonized what and where it belongs first - basically answering question 1 correctly, as did Dingdongdingbat. They both provided Model T pictures to support their claims!
You will see from the following pictures, that the light was placed in different locations close to the side of Model T Fords. These are all pictures of 1911 Model T Fords. The lamp I showed yesterday was from my great grand father's 1911 Model T Ford! I never saw either the car or my Great Grandfather - but I have the side lamp from his car! The headlights are larger, and round, and always placed up front.
Its not on the "cowl" in this picture!
I have circled it in red above!
A Zorse (of course!)
A Zedonk

the first car i remember, a HUGE old brown station wagon with the far back seat facing the wrong direction... i used to sit between the seats (the far back and the middle back)... that is when i wasnt sitting next to mommy! mom would have to tell you what kind it was cause i was much too little to care.... oh wait... there was the dodge dart that was my dads... i remember that too, it was held together by rubberbands.... i think the wagon was older though cause i was really little... when i remember the dart i was older and hated it cause it was so old....

RYC: Umm no thanks. I think I'm creepy enough to look at without my eyes blinking!! LOL
Oh and music_turned_human... I'm only 30... I think some people just know different things. I know stuff about old cars because my dad was into restoring them and such. Ask me something about an X-Box or something and I'll have no clue as I don't (and never will) own one!
My mom had a 67 Mustang when I was born. I guess that was my first ride. I would love to have that car now, but it's long gone.
My parents had a 1960 Studebaker station wagon! I've seen pictures of us in front of it. There were 5 of us (all girls) and my parents. I distinctly remember sitting on my older sister's lap on the way to church... (way back before car safety seats were made....) I was young - maybe 3 to 4 years old....
Not sure what kind of car it was but it was my grandmas and it was a station wagon with the panels on it. Looked like the family truckster. Have a good one Donkey!
awesome little history lesson there.
Hmmmm. The oldest car has to be a 60-something-or-other Ford pick-up truck owned by my grandpa. I think I was about 6 or 7 at the time and I thought it was coolest car ever!!!
I learn something new here every day. I love it!
Probably my grandfather's 57 chevy. I was around 5. My dad, however--his first vehicle was a 1910 Model T, if I remember correctly. Yes, my father. Yes, he's a bit older than you would think.
Have a good one!!
I weened I weened!!! ( trying to sound like the guy in that stupid movie I can't remember the name of... lol..)
Oldest car I remember riding in? 1960 renualt... it was robin's egg blue.... and I was very little, maybe 3 or 4... always had a memory like an elephant... lol til menopause... the elephant part stayed, but the memory is sooooooo gone! LOL

Zorse and Zedonk, you just have to love them! :D
I will never play another game again. I hate it when I lose. That's why I never play games. Boo, Hoo!
The oldest vehicle I rode in? I guess that would be a covered wagon, it was a bumpy ride too, so many hardships we had to endure along the way....
Well I rode around in the back seat of a PINTO! ARGHHH Yes and without a seatbelt while my mom and aunt were having a few beers. Boy I'm glad to be alive....those were the days I suppose
My brother had a 34 ford he restored.. his wife drove it at his funeral in honor of him..

DID I WIN¿?¿?¿?
My grandfather had an A Model Ford, navy blue with yellow spoke looking wheels. He was the original owner and he taught me how to drive in that car. A dude from the local Ford dealership came out in about 1980 and told him he could have anything on the showroom floor in exchange for it. He turned the offer down flat. A couple of years later he got sick with the flu I think...he became convinced that he was going to die so he put the car in the paper for $6000. The first person that came and looked at it nearly peed his pants and bought it on the spot. My grandpa recovered a week later and kicked himself for years.
Hey....haven't been on in awhile thought I would drop in and say "hi" Loves and Hugs!!! *Heather*
