    This is The Cookie Jar

This cookie jar sits in my kitchen. There is one just like it that sits in my mother's kitchen. 50 years ago, there was one just like it that sat in my mother's mother's kitchen. And that's where the story begins! My mom grew up with a cookie jar very much like this in her kitchen. She thought of it as her cookie jar! When I was a kid, and we would visit my Grandparents on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, or for summer vacation, there would be the cookie jar - filled with home made sugar cookies! Yum!

My Grandmother died unexpectedly in her early 60's - it devastated my mother. After a couple of years, my Grandfather remarried - and in came the evil step Grandmother! She took over my Grandmother's home! She gave away brass beds to her Grandchildren, she painted over all the hard word baseboards, she sold my Grandmother's antique Singer Sewing machine - because it looked old! But worst of all, she gave my mom's cookie jar to her daughter! Her daughter broke the lid and put the rest in her basement! My mom's precious cookie jar! I believe my mom could have forgiven all the other things that were given away or sold - but not the cookie jar!

Ebay to the rescue! One day several years back, while looking for old Christmas lights on Ebay, it occurred to me that you could find a LOT of neat old stuff on Ebay! So I did a search on cookie jars! There was my mom's cookie jar! I placed a bid. Shortly, someone else put in a higher bid! Well, to make a long story short, I SNIPED the cookie jar! Its the only thing I have ever sniped on Ebay! In any case, my mom got her cookie jar back! A year later, I got another one off Ebay - just in case my klutzy brother breaks hers, I have a spare!

So now you know the saga of the cookie jar! (Mmmm! Sugar cookies!)

California Cows Fail Latest Emissions Test

Standing around chewing the cud, cows don't look especially threatening. But dairy herds in California are the latest livestock to be branded an environmental health risk on account of their flatulent behavior. This month government regulators issued a report identifying dairy cows as the main source of smog-forming pollutants in the San Joaquin Valley, California.

The announcement highlights growing concern over the global impact of greenhouse gases produced by cattle and other livestock.

A dairy cow annually emits almost 20 pounds (9 kilograms) of smog-forming gases known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—more than a car or light truck, according to the San Joaquin Valley United Air Pollution Control District.
So its not the SUVs causing the problem! Its that milk you put on your cereal in the morning! Sounds like a lot of bull to me!

Dead Turkey Joke of the Day

As a old man was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Route 280. Please be careful!"

"It's not just one car," said Herman, "It's hundreds of them!"

So! What relatively inexpensive material item is important to you for sentimental reasons?

  • yiipppeeee, a joke i understand!  Go Donkey!

    and now i want cookies!

  • inexpensive material item?  certain salt and pepper shakers.... my parents have picked out some of my absolute favorites, and i have some that were my grandmothers too... i hvae a few things... not sure i can think of the all right now but maybe as i'm packing to move i'll get pics and do a post of my favorite things before they go in the box?

    oh.. who knows....

Happy mother's day to what's her name!

have a great sunday! (we're going to brunch YUMMY my favorite!!!!)

  • We drive by a cow farm when we head south and I BELIEVE IT!!  we thought it was cow piss!

  • spaz... shouldnt she be in bed?????

  • oh , sure, SPAZZZZ gave her most of those S&P shakers!  Does she mention those?  she is just mad she has to dust them all!!

  • It is 8:00   time to be awake!

  • I WANT COOKIES!!!

  • wow... she should get more sleep, then she wouldnt be as sensitive.....

donkey, give her cookies and keep her quiet would ya?????

  • So cows fart do they?? LOL..So next time it happens I can say "I'm not farting...I'm emittiing volatile organic compounds !!

  • ok, first of all, that clown scares me...it looks demented(sp?)..those eveil looking eyes & evil looking grin....it looks like it is just daring someone to stick their hand in there & try to snatch a cookie...LOL....an inexpensive, material thing(s) I cherish were not bought...it  is ALL the handmade christmas tree ornaments my daughter made at school, or camp fire girls etc. etc. when she was growing up....they are my "sentimental" ornaments I place on my tree every year.

  • those cookies look sooooo good!!!!!

  • so glad you found another one!!!!   youre a "mom-saver" ~ to the rescue

  • That cookie jar is creepy!!!  Clowns are creepy!!  If it wasn't for sentimental value I probably woulda busted that thing a long time ago!  LOL!!  My item that is important to me is the Pizzell (SP?) iron that used to be my grandmother's.  When she passed away I requested it and was allowed to have it (amazing since my mother was scoping out everything in the house before she even died to see what she wanted.).  I remember going to their house and they always had Pizzells (They're Italian cookies... maybe you could post about them some day lol) or they'd bring them any time we had any gathering at a holiday...  They're awesome and now I make them for holidays and gatherings and everyone loves them.  I tell ya though, those cookies are a labor of love.  The batter makes about a gross (12 dozen for those who don't know) and they are made... TWO AT A TIME in a little iron press (similar to a waffle iron).  This takes hours and my grandparents would make them all the time.

  • ha ha ha

hiding a donkey ear behind my back

    :P

  • ummmm, uh-oh!  about that ear. i seemed to have misplaced it.  I am sorry.  you know, kids and laundry and the stud and i just forgot where i put it.  Let me bounce through the house and see if i  can find it!

  • It's a lovely cookie jar and a lovely memory (cept for evil step grandma)...

I did not grow up with one...but LOML did and we have it...it's humpty dumpty

  • I wanted to say hi.. I've been really sick.. but I couldn't go another day without saying goodnight to you..

  • what a lovely thing to do for your mom... as a mom I am sure it means alot to her that you listened and remembered....  I had a step grand uncle who gave all my  aunt's stuff to his kids... she had told all of us what we were to receive and he ignored her wishes... there a special place for people like that I think....

  • That was such a heartwarming story.   My mom was like that too.  Saved everything and had a lot of stuff.   The stuff I cherish now is the 1200 ceramics I inherited.  She never finished them and now it is up to me.   She had her days and yet tried her best.   The evil mother sounds like Cinderellas.   What a ***** She must have been.    I have only seen of such things when my mother married for the second time.  I thought his family was bad.   Oh well.   Hope your day was good.

  • my pillow since i was a baby im still using it until now

  • I did understand the thought behind it.

  • thanks for sharing us the story of the cookie jar... Happy Mother's Day to your mom..

a shirt from a special friend...

have a blessed day my friend.. ingatzzzzzz

  • Awwww... sweet of you to get that cookie jar for your mom! And to have a spare... good thinking! ;)

And yeah, I got the joke this time! lol.

  • Sigh!! I envy anyone who has such a thoughtful child.  You are a very special son.

My favorite things are treasured letters and cards from my children.  I have saved almost every one of them.  There are few table decorations that I have that I remember from my childhood home.  They don't match the house but I still keep them.  I try to give anything that one of the children especially admires to them or else I find their names etched into them for future distribution.

Check out my site and see what my son did for me for Mother's day.  Music thought it was really funny.
